re: The price of war

Yeah, this from Sweden, which has spent most of its modern existence living under our military umbrella.

For a good time, try removing U.S. military spending from the equation of the last fifty years and see what the result would have been.

Headline could have been "U.S. Almost Solely Responsible For Protecting Rest of World."

Bonus points for telling me what military spending would have been less, particularly in the U.S., if the war in Iraq had been fought with what they call "institutional support." Or did the U.N. suddenly come up with a real army and its own bank account?

The term "North-South cooperation" means what it has always meant: other nations deciding what the U.S. will do with its financial resources and military power.

How about Africans getting together and doing something about Sudan? Kind of like the way Europe handled Bosnia on its own?

If al Qaeda had blown up part of Paris, would the French army be in Afghanistan today? Or would it have been another "alliance" with the U.S. carrying the load and the pundits all praising how "international" it all was?
