We still have to live here

ljk, you have been doing this Board a great service with all of your posts, sending us to papers and the like*. If you feel slighted by a lack of response, even a short "Cool, thanks! [n/t]", don't take it personally. Global warming is controversial -- people like to comment about controversial issues, whther or not they have a leg to stand on.

Also, as my subject line states, we still have to live here. Even the scientists doing the work and writing the papers you're so good at digging up and sharing with us are bound for good and all to the biosphere of Earth.

It is a laughingly thin layer than separates us from the Universe many of us love so much. It can also be maddeningly obscuring, not to mention often opaque, to the frequencies we may want to study. Nonetheless, without it there would be no "us", and the Universe would have to muddle through without an anthropic principle, or a cosmologist to propose it.

Science has two main purposes: to discover, and to educate. Education presumes a future with an educable population. The reasonably foreseeable future of H. sapiens remains on this single planet, on the thinnest of layers between the oceans and the air.
