What all do you do to customize/modify your system? Is it an application specific thing?
I suspect if 2.6.x can be made to run on a Nintendo DS, it can be done successfully on your computer.
In terms of distros, know Gentoo mostly. I'll bet if you got into the guts of the kernel setup on 2.6.11-r? and MANUALLY added only what your computer needed, then patch what isn't available, that you could get it to run. I tend to do a total rebuild if something starts acting up. "If it moves, compile it." Yea, thats me....
