Current Events » in reply to Copyright violation? Entire article and no attribution

Surprisingly, no -- that is, mostly no

This instance is kind-of odd.

I've just had my understanding of "fair use" refreshed by the closest person we have to a resident expert, Mary Anne. A good rule of thumb for general purposes at the Zone might be stated as "10%, plus attribution, with a link to the remainder".

Lindy did make sure to say that she'd received the entire text in an email. However, it took me no more than 2 minutes with Google to track down the original source: "The Arctic Beacon" -- which near as I can tell, is wholly owned and operated by Greg Szymanski, the author of the article (and many others listed on the site, none of which seem to be written by anyone else).

I was unable to find a copyright notice anywhere on the site. Furthermore, he apparently also owns and operates Public Domain Publishing. Sounds like a hint to me...

Lindy (among others), please take note:

The proper way to have presented this material to the rest of us would have been [a] attempt to find the source on your own; [b] once you'd found it, "cherry pick" quotes to suit your purpose, but try very hard not to exceed 10% of the copy; [c] provide the attribution and link.

No harm, no foul... this time, with this source. But the sooner we all get into the habit, the less nervous Robert will be.
