re: Looking at the Iraqi constitution

"A while back Tom posted a link to the draft, and I took a belated closer look at it. It is indeed seriously flawed, and nothing reveals the domestic public relations agenda of the Bush Administration better than the fact that they're forcing the Iraqis to proceed despite the disastrous timebombs ticking away in that document."

Compare this to:
"Al-Mutlaq also highlighted the American role in bridging the gap between the different parties involved in the process but he put the blame on the other parties (the Sheat and the Kurds) for focusing on "their narrow partisan and sectarian" interests.

Our only difference we had with the Americans was about setting a rigid timetable for completing the process."

I note that the deadline was Aug 15, and it's now Aug 28th, the American Administration is pushing it, but the Iraqi govt hasn't been forced to meet the deadline. Pressured, yes. I would say there would be a problem if in this negotiation the Iraqis WERE NOT complaining about Americans pushing to meet deadlines.
And yes, it's a tough deadline. And one could say this whole process is going faster than is reasonable to expect.
BUT it should be mentioned that even reasonable people have complained that this process should have been MUCH, MUCH quickier- that all of this should have compressed and completed a few months time.
In the end, this will be an Iraqi constitution and no doubt it will have some problems as far as Iraqis are concerned. Our concern as Americans should be that Iraqis are happy with it- or probably more accurately that vast majority of Iraqis can be happy enough to live with it.
And finally this piece of paper will be voted on, so it's possible [or probable if majority of Iraqis feel their interests are not being addressed] that this will be voted down. But it seems fairly on track, I guess further along than EU constitition.
