I do agree with the statement, as far as it goes.

The trouble is, the US has enough to do without even appearing to interfere with Iraq's political process any more than we already have.

For a US official to make such remarks is rather like a 900-lb. gorilla blocking the door out of a room. Clearly influence is intended.
