You have the ACLU on one side that get's lawyers involved everytime a police officer starts moving a rowdy demonstration and then you have the welfare class that are conditioned to demand assistance from the government and military ASAP.
This same non sequitur emerged after 9/11.
On one side they imagine special forces and Marines standing by in a fleet of MV-22 Ospreys to come with assistance within 10 minutes and out of the other side they are griping about our Orwellian society and the increasing police state.
To top it off they whine about military spending.
A military base just outside of every major town was the 1950's defense strategy.
You had a throwaway line about Civil Defense, the other day. This NEVER would have happened if the old Civil Defense program had not been shelved by Carter. CD is needed more than ever. If one thing should emerge from this it is the reinstatement of the CD program in as close a form to the old one as possible.
Whether it be reaction to terrorist dirty bomb or natural disasters - CD will be essential for the 21st century.
