"Reality#1" did not refute anything that I've seen in the media. Not sure what the myth is supposed to be.
"Reality#2" can I see an example of the media stating that of those left behind: a) all were black,
b) all were poor, and
c) none were rich.
Obviously, I have only seen a small proportion of the total coverage, but none that I have seen said anything of the kind. I remember a film-clip on a network (likely NBC, but maybe CBS) of a white woman, waist-deep in water pointing out that it was not a racial nor class disaster, but was a disaster for all (apologies I can't provide a real quote).
Even so, it should be obvious that the people left behind are a) those who by special circumstances (elevation of residence eg) thought they would be safe (my ex-wife falls in this catagory, by the way. She and her family are evacuated to Shreveport at the moment), or b) some form of stupid or stubborn, or c) unable to get out because they had no means to do so. It looks like the latter group makes up the largest part of the refugee-base. Those in group A would have been the easiest to get to and rescue (as in my ex's case). A lot of the Bs probably make up the bodybag residents, and I would guess that their racial mix would mirror that of the area's.
So yeah, a large proportion of the people who were still there after the disaster, and a large proportion of the people who were in the Superdome and the Convention Center were black. And a large proportion of them were poor. To report otherwise would be grossly inaccurate.
"Reality#3" OMG, did he really say that the sort of people that the storm harmed somehow proves Bush is not a racist??? Lemme quote that and let the wind distribute the aroma for a sec: The destruction from the storm affected far more whites than blacks. This is the ultimate answer to the racism charge that Bush did not do enough because the victims were black. Yikes!
Here's another reality that has to do with human nature: you separate off a group of people who desperately need help and reassurance. If that help and assurance is not forthcoming, then that group will be royally pissed and there will be a lot of speculation (some of it unrealistic) about why. If the Superdome was full of Republicans we would hear similar claims.
"Reality#4" About the media "ignoring" other areas hard hit. Well I can only say that I heard news about the Mississippi coast. Entire towns gone. Saw some airial pix. Don't see what the myth is supposed to be: anyone around here think that New Orleans was the only spot devastated?
And there may be other reasons that New Orleans got the attention it did: like that's where the stranded refugee story was? Or maybe because it was the only major American city devastated by the storm? # of people killed? Dramatic hospital evacuations?
"Reality#5" don't see a myth here either. No info I did not already know.
Tom if you could just help me see what these "different stories" are supposed to refute, it would be great.
"Reality #6" Indeed there are guardsmen and they are helping a great deal. Remains to be seen if their contribution equals what it would have if their equipment had not been raided and sent to Iraq with other units (so my guardsman ex-brother-in-law tells me - his unit cannot do effective training for lack of equipment). I doubt we will ever hear if there was an impact or not. Only complaints I have heard were that they did not show up for a while. That order was not established very quickly nor thouroughly. Dunno whose fault it is.
"Reality #7" I haven't heard much about this story at all. Probably should not comment, except to say that this coverage can't be as extensive as this guy claims.
