I find the turning of a national catastrophe into an opportunity for political grandstanding pretty nauseating, too. So quit making me sick.
The leadership is supposed to lead, not to react. Barring positive action before the event, reaction is an acceptable, if not excellent, second choice, depending on what one reacts to. The Bush league's first impulse was to react to their critics, not to the catastrophe. They started playing political recovery before they launched meaningful recovery efforts in the area stricken by Katrina. That says a lot about what is most important in their clubhouse.
