Is Pournelle adding anything positive to the first article? It's not my impression.
600,000 pounds..looks a lot like the mass of the 2 stage rocket planned to lift the CXV into LEO, and only the 4 tons capsule is recovered.

SF writers have spread lots of illusions to our minds during our youth.
