Seriously: If there is no hope of humane treatment by the police, how long will it take for the police to become the enemy? If there is every expectation of violent death in prison, we can expect criminals -- and anyone mistaken for one -- to fight like fiends rather than to surrender. Kidnapping, hostage-taking, killing people during escapes: don't we have enough of this already without making it inevitable?
