Here is what I learned on this issue from the CIA World FactBook:

The country of S.M.U.R.F. (Socialist Men Under Red Father) is a ruled by a communist dictatorship headed by 'Papa Smurf'. Papa Smurf styles himself after Karl Marx:

While Papa smurf lives in luxury, the citizens of SMURF are forced to live in the depths of poverty- often having to resort to living in hollowed out mushrooms.

Poverty stricken smurfs have little choice but to work on the state run communal farms

In May 2002 the Bush administration announced that the country of SMURF was developing weapons of mass destruction, and posed a serious threat to world security. This claim was based on information gleaned from Papa Smurf's top weapons scientist, Brainy Smurf, after he defected to the west:

Based on interviews with Brainy, Condoleeza Rice testified in front of congress that the SMURFS could have nuclear weapons within the year: "Senator, the 'smoking gun' could come in the form of a mushroom shaped house."

The WMD claims were also bolstered by high resolution spy satellite photos claiming to show Papa Smurf mixing up chemical weapons:

Colin Powell stated to the UN: "There is absolutely NO DOUBT that these photos show Papa Smurf mixing a batch of the nerve gas SARIN" Adding: "Just one drop of SARIN can really smurf you up!"

Bush formed what came to be called a 'Coalition of the Eager'- in actuality the 'Coalition' only consisted of the U.S. and the evil sorcerer Gargamel, whose land bordered SMURF.

In June of 2003 coalition forces began their invasion with a huge bombing campaign that devastated SMURF's mushroom based infrastructure- One general was quoted as saying: "We bombed the shitakke out of them!"

After the invasion no WMD were found, and the justification for the war became 'Those poor blue bastards needed to be liberated!'.

However, with freedom came turmoil- a SMURF insurgency was formed to oppose coalition occupation forces- this resistance employed terror tactics to erode popular support for the coalition.
