How would this compare to asteroid mining?
Asteroid mining has the advantage of no gravity well. I don't have numbers for the delta-V requirements of landing equipment on the Moon or lifting materials off of it, compared to the requirements of velocity changes needed for accessing an (Apollo) asteroid. Obviously, it would depend on the orbit.
A single half-mile diameter nickel-iron asteroid, assuming it assays out similarly to meteors of similar composition, would exceed the known world reserves for nickel, cobalt and platinum.
