Aspects of the Viking design that would make it insensitive to dust clearing events are that there were no solar panels and no sun sensor. Additionally, I recall that the cameras "closed" into a protective hood when not actually taking happy snaps so there would be no obvious clearing of the lens cover.

Pathfinder would have been more obvious but with it's very short surface life it may well have missed any big events.
