Mental prostheses

This is why we've got to get our minds out of our bodies before it is too late. Our bodies are not evolving fast enough for our rapidly expanding mental capacities.

We're already doing that. In fact, in a sense we've been doing that since we invented writing as auxiliary external storage for thoughts. The trend began to take off half a century ago with the first computers, and since the 80s the curve's been approaching vertical. Computers are mental prostheses, and telecommunications technologies are a related extension of our brains.

The brain as an organ is unlike any other in our bodies, because it's not confined to our bodies. It communicates and synergizes with other brains, and causes our bodies to build technological artifacts that extend the brain's powers.

I think that humans have gone beyond physical evolution as it's worked for the last billion years, and our future evolution is going to be in the mental dimension. We'll soon master biology and DNA, and while we may choose to upgrade our bodies, that's not evolution, thats...ohmigod, that's Intelligent Design!

ID is completely bogus as a description of past and present reality, but I think it's a self-fulfilling prophecy for the future.
