...was Day of the Dead. I thought it was completely uncompromising, but it can only be judged, imho, by viewing the uncut version. The numbing violence is part of the message, and if it's cut the film becomes largely pointless.
I thought Land of the Dead was OK. It was well-produced and fun. Good cast. Did you catch the two guys from Shaun of the Dead? No question, it carries the message "live and let live," even if the one you're letting live is...er, well, dead.
There was a time when the horror film could be used to convey a message that would have been politically or socially unacceptible in almost any other genre, but that time has passed. Zombie-flick as political manifesto just doesn't cut it anymore. If you want to make a film that criicizes the Bush admin and the war, then just make it. It doesn't have to be wrapped up and sold as something else. Even audiences raised on Hollywood pablum have gotten past that point.
