A misconception...

I can't imagine anyone liberal or conservative that isn't disgusted with the stories of executive bonuses in the current economy.

My future son in law has a degree in History and he is trapped in the food service industry. His income is well above the poverty level but that is not the point.

I am fortunate to have a work background that has allowed me to work on insurance claim projects that pay me $50 per hour from time to time. It has dwindled down to very little in the last couple of years but a major storm or other disaster always brings me work if I choose to accept it. That wouldn't be true if my career had been in Restaurant management.

In my opinion anything that makes it easier to be a career burger flipper is not a positive thing. Paying burger flippers a so called living wage may be the fair thing but it will do nothing to prevent the two class society that you foresee.

I don't differ that much in what you want for our country. If doubling the minimum wage will improve our economy and improve our standard of living, bring it on. I simply don't think it will work in a free market economy.

To accomplish what you guys want we would need to bring all of the work back home. That would be agonizing and it might not even be apocalyptic.

The best reality possible is to try to make the middle class as big as possible and the burger flippers (no offense intended, it's the term you used) as happy as possible. This is the drift of every major country on Earth. A hundred years from now we will have a world of hegemonies with economic systems tailored to the world economy
