Off Topic » in reply to they're all wrong. The real danger is the flouride in the water supply

According to my son in San Diego...

(a city that doesn't put fluoride in the drinking water), it's the long-haired hippy types who think fluoride is a conservative plot. It's kind of funny because, as I told him, that particular conspiracy theory used to be the domain of groups like the John Birch Society. I guess this is an example of equal opportunity kookdom.

Perhaps this guy is right:

Remember the Mobius Strip ?
It was that thing that was cited as proof that there is such a thing as a one-sided object. Essentially, it amounted to a strip of paper with a half turn in it and the ends attached together. You'd put a pen on it and, without lifting the pen, you could draw a single line that covered both the inside and outside.

In the 50's, the ultra-rightest John Birch Society conducted an ongoing, and generally fruitless, battle with elected officials to try to keep fluoride out of our drinking water. As I recall, it was something about a Communist conspiracy to poison our children. Last year, the far-left Arcata, California City Council (known for, among things, its vote to prohibit city employees from enforcing the Patriot Act), began giving serious consideration to a demand by local...even further left... activists to reverse the city's fifty-year policy and remove fluoride. Something about a right-wing, Corporate conspiracy to poison our children.

Now, the two most conservative members of the Escondido, California City Council, including Assembly candidate Marie Waldron, are trying to pressure newly elected moderate Sam Abed to... you guessed it... take the fluoride out of the drinking water. We're not quite clear which 'conspiracy' is supposed to be involved this time. One thing is certain: fluoride has gone from being a right-wing issue, to a left-wing issue, back to a right-wing issue.

Maybe politics is like a Mobius strip: you go far enough in one direction, you end up on the other side.
