My wife was a dental assistant for a number of years and has told me horror stories about kids who were overflouridized. Its not a pretty condition. However anything is bad when not taken in the right doses. We self flouridate our kids. We are careful not to give it to them if they've had milk recently for some reason I've forgotten, so I'd have to ask my wife who is my resident expert on matters of tooth health.
We're not opposed to flouridation, since there are very few families who self flouridate, it would provide many children with heathier teeth who wouldn't benefit otherwise. But I can understand the arguments against it. Since flouridation only benefits children, I'd rather see public money which would be spent on such a project go to providing flouridation tablets for middle and low-income families free of charge. That way your spending the money only where its useful and not on the public at large.
