If you read the reports (most of them are short) and assume that the majority of them are from sincere people who have actually seen something, you will note that their objects sound a lot like bright meteors.
While one might ask how people in 21st Century USA can still mistake meteors for alien ships, I am often reminded at how little so many people know about even basic astronomy. I have personally encountered people who did not know what stars were, or that there were craters on the Moon (!). One woman insisted to me that a twinkling, multicolored UFO hovered at the end of her driveway for hours. It turned out to be the Dog Star, Sirius - and yes, I am.
I have even met people who did not know where the Sun rose and set in the sky, and one wasn't even sure that Earth orbited the Sun! And no, I did not take a time journey back to 1452.
