If it hadn't been the WP, it would have been something else. Nothing has changed on the Left since Vietnam, and if the military had to constantly consider how "acceptable" their methods of killing geurillas and terrorists are, we'd be losing even more American troops than we are.
During WWII, we would have dealt with the supply line between Baghdad and Syria by annihilating every potential terrorist base between those two points with saturation bombing from squadrons of B-17s.
Our troops are doing this door-to-door, evacuating civilians to camps outside the towns, and taking fearful personal risks. This gets them absolutely nothing in the way of approval by their adversaries inside the United States. Instead, their casualty figures are trumpeted by people who have no frigging idea what's going on, or why Americans are dying to save Iraqi lives.
