Zarqawi/al Qaeda's motive is the conquest of Iraq, its conversion to radical Islam, and the spread of that rule to the rest of the Middle East and eventually the world. They have described this in their writings.
The idea that Zarqawi's only goal is the removal of foreign forces from Iraq doesn't stand up to even a mild examination, especially considering he was active in northern Iraq long before we showed up. This motivation has been glued onto him by the American Left, which has to jam the war into Iraq into their meme of an outraged population of civilians trying to throw off the Evil Oppressor from America. Moore's "Minuteman" concept.
This may or may not change your comparison with Ghandi, who, as far as I know, was not interested in ruling India.
