Space/Science » in reply to readiness for Mars

re: readiness for Mars

Something you need to understand here is if you boil down what Bell is complaining about it is the lack of research in these areas by the various groups. We are in some fantasy land because of this. Well, the problem is he is doing exactly what he is accusing us of doing.

An example: he has not even in a cursory way checked out the thermal issues for a spacesuited person on Mars. The caloric output is higher for a person working in a pressure suit than the losses by contact with the atmosphere or the ground by the feet. We will still need to remove heat not prevent freezing unless the person lays down on the ground or something like that. Besides few EVAs will be at night.

The case is the same with all his complaints.

I think you and Raoul are vastly exaggerating the difficulties involved in a 3 year mission to Mars and back. We need to know a long list of things about the radiation, dust and soil and logistics. But, if we had the correct infrastructure built a trip could be done within the decade with some risk for sure but not unmanageable risk.
