The first -- and so far only -- time I saw Mercury for sure was last year when I was in Puyallup, WA, and spied a triad of what seemed to be planetary bodies near the horizon. Took a picture (but since there was no tripod, it smeared) and checked the next day to find out it was Mercury, Venus and Saturn.
