Actually, it's more likely UN-altered basaltic grains - specifically the heavy and mafic minerals such as hornblende, augite, tourmaline, olivine etc. The lighter dunes are likely the more altered and andesitic minerals.
Composition would be similar to a Hawaiian black sand beach, though the erosion is rather different.
