Seriously...
If we get a better idea of the types of dark and light material that make up Mars' surface, we could probably get a better understanding of those seasonal changes in the patterns on the surface of Mars that, for so many years, people assumed were from vegetation of some kind. In actuality, it seems to me to have something to do with sandstorms and distribution of material on the surface.
