Maybe, just maybe,

this kind of article is designed to convince religious people to not object to their tax dollars being spent on billion dollar telescope complexes and particle accellerators.

I remember when I was a kid, when my family members learned of my interest in astronomy, they thought it was a total waste of time. One, you couldn't be guaranteed a decent job that way; and two, the only science that really mattered was medicine, because that might have an immediate practical benefit for the common man. For them, verything else was little boys playing with chemistry sets.

I don't know if this attitude is widespread, or if its just a Cuban thing. But we are all familiar with the attitude that says "there are some things that Man was not meant to know". As far as I was concerned, even as a kid, those were the ONLY things really worth knowing.
