I used to use Methanol all the time to clean optics...
I don't recall it being particularly toxic.
It is highly toxic if ingested... I have also heard warnings that it can be absorbed through the skin. I used to use methanol for cleaning optics- now I use 190 proof ethanol. I prefer to use methanol... but its toxicity makes employers nervous.
I just ordered 70 gallons of 190 proof ethanol... (for work, not for a party)... it is what we dissolve our laser dye in.
