I was thinking about how a primitive culture would create and move such an object. The answers don't come easily.
What tools could shape stone of such hardness? Metal tools of fine precision would be needed.
Mathematical precision would be required far in advance of the average primitive culture.
To move such a heavy object would require several men, some of them would require many men. However, because the size of the object is small, many men wouldn't be able to handle it at one time. Moving such a heavy spherical object would be dangerous too. If it rolls the wrong way or rolls back, you're toast. It appears to be designed in such a manner as to make human manipulation difficult.
The page Raoul linked to 'debunking' the myths didn't do anything of the sort unfortunately. Saying it is related to 'pottery' of ancient periods is ridiculous. These objects are not pots, bowls or anything remotely related to pottery.
The magnetic north alignment and the geographic placement of some of them indicate a much more sophisticated culture with a knowledge of mathematics, astronomy and with advanced sculpting tools and a compass or some other magnetic field reading devices. The sheer quantity of the stones implies that such were either EASY to make for the makers, or that HUGE numbers of workers were involved in mining, transporting, sculpting and placing the spheres.
Atlantis or some other as yet unknown advanced culture as a solution doesn't provide many/any more answers either. What would any hypothetical advanced civilization do with such stone spheres? Do the stones have any unique properties such as storing heat easily? Were they shaped by advanced lasers, or some manufacturing process with metal presses and are merely the equivalent of the black footmen lawn ornaments popular decades ago or the little garden gnomes sculptures found adorning landscaping today. And if so where are the remains of the presses and the lasers?
Then of course we can try to place extraterrestrial origin upon the shaping of the stones, but this is equally a non-solution. Without evidence or something to indicate such was possible, then we are no better off than with the 'musketballs' of the gods solution.
They are a mystery, and one which would be fun to travel back in time to find the answer or solution. But one would need to know WHEN they were made. Scientists have little evidence to work with. Just going back in time randomly would take a VERY long time to discover their moment of origin and their purpose.
One needs more than a modified transmogrifier for this one.
