Von Braun had plans for a manned Mars mission that would
have gotten humans on Mars by 1984.
Nixon and Agnew helped to kill that plan not long after
Apollo 11.

I'll be amazed if we have humans on the Moon again
in my life time at this rate. And to think when I was
a kid I was certain we'd have bases on the Moon and
Mars long by now.
