I heard an interview with astronaut Ron Sega on von Braun's plan several years ago
He said that it would've been possible to launch such a mission by 1984 but the crew would've been dead by the time they got to Mars. He said that we just didn't have the life support technology available at the time. He's certainly entitled to his opinion. Based on his bio, I'd give his opinion more weight that most.
