We live in a nation where a third of the population believes the rest of us have no business being here.
They see us as alien, foreign, illegitimate. We are here only to take from them what is rightfully theirs, what they have earned through their work ethic, civic virtues, moral supremacy and superior common sense values, not to mention the fact they were here first. When this can be demonstrated as patently false, they insist on identifying with that paradigm, and cast those who resist it as demonstrably corrupt and seditious.
Even for those of us who can claim kinship with the Real America, if only by right of seniority and occupation, then it is believed we have sold out to the Other. We are fools or traitors, the 47%, fifth columnists, or otherwise ineligible for true citizenship. In their eyes, we have taken over the institutions of the society, corrupted its youth, despised its traditions, dominated its commerce and co-opted its government. And now, we've actually elected one of our own as President.
Yeah, I guess we have our work cut out for us. But we have one great advantage: they are the minority.
