Capitalism is the enemy of democracy. Without restraints, and without any conscious conspiracy, capitalism will slowly but surely mutate a democracy into some variation of a feudal order. It does so organically, by establishing economic power relationships wholly outside the officially-egalitarian system...and most crucially, deniably outside the official order. That's what lets conservatives posture about how the only threat to (technical) freedom is a tyrannical government, and willfully ignore the real and much more oppressive economic order.
I have contact with the "tyrannical" Federal government perhaps once a year, when I pay taxes.
I'm in contact with laissez-faire capitalism on a daily basis.
Who really oppresses us more?
