I've got that book, too.
In fact, I have the original issues of the "CoEvolution Quarterly." I was a subscriber for some years back then.
The comments from various members of the Left in those issues, both pro and con, were my first clue that for some people, the last thing they wanted to see was human progress, even if done cleanly. The later "cold fusion" flap brought out more such negative opinions, and pretty much sealed it for me.
