have they thought of using bar codes to organize such things
If all bins and objects had barcodes on them, then you could just scan the object and the bin you are placing object in and a computer could keep memory and track of locations of all stored items. Would there be a problem in using such a method? Of course, if someone gets in a hurry and doesn't scan then you are back to square one.
At some point when micro sensors get cheap enough, I would expect all objects to be tagged and be locatable through their passive or active sensor tags. I believe this is one problem that should be almost completely solved eventually through the use of such technology.
