But I honestly don't think we will get high data transmission rates with lasers over interstellar distances- at least not with current technology. I have looked into this, and I like to think I know a bit about the topic... I do make a living shooting lasers into space....
The problem I see is signal to noise- a long spectrographic exposure could detect a beacon.... but not a complex message...
