What's the status of Rover Landers ?

Are they mute, powered down or just lying there waiting to be photgraphed? Seems like a waste of hardware when a few cams and wind/temp/radiation sensors can be in place to continue science.
And I still say they should launch a few balloons with mini cams to get some data after the rovers leave, like a month or two later.
