Inboard Motor on 1983 Imperial Boat

I recently bought a 1983 Imperial Boat and the motor runs fine out of water, but the minute I put it in the water, it wants to cut off. I have been told that it is probably the gas that was left in it. That I need to run it out. But my son filled it up before we knew it would cut off in the water. Does any one know of a solution ?
