Time for something completely different

Did you ever see the first season and a half of ST:TNG? Most of the
episodes were terrible, juvenile. You can blame it on the series' creators
trying to find their comfort zone, but I beg to differ. But the series did
get better and I always had far more respect (read believed) for Picard
as a ship's captain. And he knew how to "behave" himself too around
women, unlike a previous captain. When Picard did get involved, it was
with a mature woman in an actual relationship. They left the picking up
the bimbos job to Riker.

And as much as I enjoyed ST since its origin, it is time for something
completely different. There is only so much you can do with the setup -
a crew of mostly humans (and a few token aliens) on a way-too-big
starship flown on make-believe FTL devices and materials cruising the
galaxy for new alien life to contact and coming across mostly humans
in rubber suits (I don' wanna hear about budgets and actors needing
salaries no more!) who are barely different from late 20th Century
Americans (and sometimes not at all!) where the brave, noble mostly
human crew solves their centuries-long problems in 43 minutes. And
of course if you're Kirk you get the one hot babe on the entire planet.

And if they did meet a seriously advanced alien species, they acted
more like supernatural gods, which put ST into the fantasy realm more
often than they would care to admit.

And the science in ST - yeah, they knew what a galaxy actually was,
but more often than not science took a back seat both in accuracy and
importance. Eh, don't give me that it's an entertainment show not Nova -
you can have both, laddie! And if the education system in this country
would ever do things right, science would be entertaining as well as
educational!

Most other "clones" of Star Trek have rarely strayed from the same
formula, which I blame largely on the lacking imaginations of most
television head honchos who wouldn't know real science fiction if it
grabbed them with giant, slimy tentacles and swallowed them whole.

I know there was that series Lexx, but I never got the chance to
see it so I cannot comment on it.

What do I think would make a good and overall original science fiction
series that isn't just some old naval adventure ramped up into space
with phasers instead of pistols? Try Orion's Arm:

I loved ya, Star Trek, but it's time to enter the real 21st Century.
