While going through a box of research papers yesterday I found an article I had pulled from the SCIENCE section of the Tampa Tribune on Jan. 15, 2001. It was called "Mimicking the Bomb" and it was about the department of Energy's National Ignition Facility being built at the National labs in Livermore for 3.5 billion dollars. This huge laser was "designed to simulate nuclear weapons tests and advance research into fusion science".
Seeing as I haven't followed up on this, I have no idea how far fusion science has gone since then, but I had read about these unusual silent "explosions" a few days before this, and pulled the article to read it to see if it offered any clues. Will read it later tonight and get back to you with my thoughts.
