"I saw a film today, oh boy.
The English Army had just won the war..."
--A Day in the Life, Lennon-McCartney
Defeating Hitler and the Japanese was a group effort, and its not surprising everyone wants the credit. The truth is no one can can fully claim it. None of the allies would have been enough, at least, not by 1945.
The Brits fought them alone, and longer than anyone else, and they provided and defended the "stationary aircraft carrier" that made invasion and victory even possible. Hitler and the Japanese made their big mistakes of expanding the war primarily because the Brits would not stop fighting when they were supposed to. It was indeed "their finest hour."
They also provided huge manpower resources from their Commonwealth, and a string of worldwide bases in the Empire, and the Royal Navy.
We added our own magnificent Navy, and our industrial might and natural resources. And we also took on the Japanese pretty much single-handed.
But the Soviets did most of the fighting, and most of the dying, and took most of the damage. The war in the West was a sideshow. Most Wehrmacht casualties by far occurred in Russia.
It is important to keep in mind, the German advance into Russia was stopped around the same time as Pearl Harbor Day, and the Axis was in full retreat in the East on D-Day. The war had already turned around by the time we really got into it.
