We use reward/punishment to teach other humans. I'm just saying that it sucks, it's too slow, and it won't work over interstellar distances. If we could plant an idea in the mind of any species on earth, that would give us an edge in SETI. A single pulse of data for example, could compell other species out there to turn their attention this way, to respond. See what I'm saying?
Just consider the benefits that ability would have on people. To plant an idea, and in one shot have it understood, and responded to positively. It's asking alot, obviously. But there's that old expression: "Any technology sufficiently advanced will be indistinguishable from magic." And as far as communicating with all the animals on Earth: "Only God could do that."
I think as long as we depend entirely on machine technology, hammering metal components together and adding electricity, to create a product that also consists entirely of inert or mechanical components, that that's all we'll ever achieve. The above expression will effectively mean "Any technology sufficiently advanced will be indistinguishable from magic, and probably just as unrealistic."
