Summation - a beach book with sloppy history thrown in

For some reason I was expecting a novel along the lines of Umberto Eco's
The Name of the Rose, but instead I got a passable entertainment novel.
Indeed, it almost read like a film script.

One part I was particularly annoyed with was when our "hero" was teaching
his class at Harvard (of course Harvard - community colleges are for B-grade
comedies, right?) for the primary purpose of explaining some bit of history.
The worst part is that his class were a bunch of stereotypes and the dialogue
was awful.

Be that as it may, DVC is passable reading, but the amount of attention it is
getting is highly disproportionate to its quality as literature.

And as for the theme, c'mon, I've seen dozens of SF novels about totalitarian
societies that keep control over their populations based on a lie that one lone
hero will risk his life to reveal to the unwashed masses.
