Sheesh, let me guess -- stick a USB memory stick into the right hole and it automatically will update the software from it, no questions asked if the right files are on the stick? Or something like that at least.
I'm intrigued that Diebold makes such crappy voting machines -- this isn't the first such thing that has been teh result of apparent stupidity or laziness. Diebold also makes lots of ATMs and other unattended transaction devices for banks and other businesses. If ATMS were taht easy to break into, surely we'd have seen thefts where the M.O. was "insert USB stick, wait for money to shoot out".
If I recall correctly, Diebold actually bought some other small company that was in the voting machine business and so it could be a matter of this being a unit that just sucks vs their core ATM, cash register, etc unit.
