re: Another convert to human-caused global warming - how long can Tom hold out?

So what you're saying is that the laissez-faire American politico-economic complex has failed to make nuclear power a success, even after its head start, while the socialist governments of Europe have been able to do so. I know France not only has a functioning fuel-recovery cycle, but imports nuclear waste for processing, at a profit.

Perhaps the reason for this is summed up in your own remarks "Europe has been doing this- and the difference is our laws causing nuclear plants to be more costly." Part of the return on investment of nuclear power generation is in intangibles: cleaner air, freedom from foreign oil, etc. which are hard to quantify for corporate profit but which make sense for the society as a whole. Europe saw nuclear power as a social benefit for the entire community, not just another means for private enterprise to get rich off a government-subsidized technology.
