"I can recall a plan by some Arab nations to tow big chunks of
polar ice to their water-parched lands in the 1970s. They certainly
had the cash for such an idea if not much else. If they were going
to bring the big ice cubes all the way to the Middle East, then stopping
in the mid Atlantic and leaving them there has to be cheaper."
Making fresh water from sea water is expensive- Saudi Arabia spends about amount of electricity the entire Iraq uses for making it's fresh water. A simple solution might be for Iraq to export some of it's water to SA and other countries. But in terms of it's value in terms of fresh water, moving ice burgs could make economic sense- though I would think that using nuclear powered tugs might be good idea.
The main thing would be doing it so it's the cheapest. You would probably want mined like you strip mine coal.
Tow berg to around equator, use big bucket and big dump trucks and/or conveyor belt, load into special super tanker to ship to location. You couldn't use entire ice berg so the left overs could be used for hurricane control.
