southren politics

I am bemused by the Alabama political goings on as we get near our gubernatorial primary and all the local and statewide offices up for grabs.

Just a few things:

Our democrat ex-Governor Seigleman is running for the dem nomination in spite of the fact that he is currently on trial in Federal court for corruption and racketeering. Thankfully, he is well behind little known Lt Gov. Lucy Baxley. Our incumbent GOP Governor Bob Riley is heading for almost certain reelection after the best 4 year term in years. That's assuming he overcomes the charges of being a closet liberal.

George Wallace Jr. is running for Lt Governor against charges that he is a flaming liberal, complete with a quote from a Mass. newspaper comparing him to Dukakis.

Virtually every candidate for large office and small proudly claims the title of conservative and I have never heard anyone ask for votes on the basis of being a liberal. The term liberal is so damning in these parts I have no doubt that some of our liberal zoners, forced to endure a campaign season here, would die of apoplexy.

In fact is the terms democrat and republican along with liberal and conservative are somewhat meaningless in my South since liberal democrats and conservative republicans may not be what you expect them to be and there is sufficient corruption for all.

Just wondering, do politicians in the blue states proudly claim to be liberals (or conservatives for that matter).
