Some stuff on Compaqs

here

I moonlighted for a bit in a call center for HP/Compaq laptops, but they took away all access to their service info as soon as I left - they have online videos and excellent step by step instructions for all aspects of repair for the various models, not that that does you any good.

It could easily be available online to any customer, but then they would lose out on their lucrative customer "support" business.

If it's not too old, you could purchase an extended warranty and then get it fixed under that... might be cheaper than buying a new unit. OTOH, I much prefer a "real" keyboard to a laptop's pretend one any day, but portability is not great.

Good luck.
