Agreed.
This is the primary, short-term, business reason WHY we need a space program. It will either show the environmental doom-sayers are correct, or mistaken. To shut it down (especially considering its modest costs and collateral benefits) in favor of grandstanding manned missions is either incredibly stupid or demoniacly clever.
