It's always occurred to me that what the Universe most resembles is not a machine, but a computer model, a simulation. Perhaps even one of many. Who's to say if the Great Programmer isn't waiting for the results, or if he's even comparing us against other runs. "Now let's see what happens if I bump up the Fine Structure Constant." To think all this is here just for our benefit strikes me as hubris.
